A cooling system problem does not always begin with a puddle under the vehicle. Some components fail internally, operate intermittently, or lose efficiency without allowing coolant to escape. The first warning may be weak cabin heat, a temperature gauge that rises in traffic, or an engine that runs hotter during highway driving.

1. The Thermostat Can Stick
The thermostat controls coolant flow between the engine and radiator. It stays closed while the engine warms, then opens as operating temperature rises. If it sticks closed, coolant may not reach the radiator, causing the engine temperature to increase quickly.
A thermostat can also stick partly open. In that case, the engine may take too long to warm up, the heater may perform poorly, and fuel economy may decline. 2. The Water Pump Can Lose Efficiency

When the impeller no longer moves enough coolant, the engine may overheat during acceleration, highway travel, or heavy loads. Temperature testing can reveal cold sections where coolant is not flowing through the core. The technician may also examine airflow, coolant condition, and pressure before recommending cleaning or replacement. A restricted radiator should not be diagnosed from appearance alone because internal blockage may not be visible.
5. The Radiator Cap Can Lose Pressure Control
The radiator or coolant reservoir cap helps maintain pressure inside the cooling system. Pressure raises the coolant’s boiling point, allowing it to absorb more engine heat before vapor forms. The cap also controls coolant movement between the radiator and expansion reservoir.
A weak spring or damaged seal may release pressure too early without creating a large visible leak. Coolant can boil at a lower temperature, move into the reservoir, or create air pockets as the engine cools. The vehicle may overheat under load even though the coolant level looks acceptable before the trip.
A cap can be pressure-tested to determine whether it opens and seals at the correct specification. Replacing it is inexpensive compared with repairing an overheated engine, but the rest of the system should still be inspected to rule out combustion pressure, restricted flow, or another fault.
